Twilight Meetings

Twilight meetings are informal workshops geared towards growers - large and small - that highlight unique and innovative production and marketing methods that are keeping agriculture viable in New Jersey.  We will be adding to this list, so please check back regularly.

Twilight Meetings are free to NOFA-NJ members and non-members may attend for $10, to defray the costs of the meeting.

Twilight Meeting at Two Pond Farm

Come explore this small-scale, diverse farm in West Milford, NJ, with farmers Allison and Roger Hosford. Lots to see here - veggies, sheep, hogs, chickens, turkeys - and lots to learn about! "Two Pond Farm is nestled between two large, spring-fed ponds surrounded by Norven Green State Forest. The land is rough and rocky, the soil is rich and shallow, and the water is clean."

Twilight Meeting at Riverine Ranch

They've come a long way from their suburban Long Island home where they grew up. What's so unique about what the Foleys' do? They raise water buffalo! During their trips to Italy, they visited many farms and fell in love with the docile and intelligent personalities of the Water Buffalo. "Their high-butterfat milk is ideal for making gourmet cheese, ice-cream, and yogurt." After purchasing their first buffalo in 2005 they quickly realized they needed more land. In 2010 they acquired a 62-acre farm and are currently in the process of re-pairing infrastructure, as well as building a brand new milking parlor and state-certified kitchen where they intend to make their own buffalo mozzarella cheeses, yogurt, and ice cream.

This Twilight meeting will focus on the re-building and construction phases of livestock farms, the challenges of accessing preserved farmland in New Jersey, and how they're trying to make it financially sustainable, in addition to, why water buffalo?!

The Ebbitt Room, Blue Pig Tavern, and Rusty Nail are all restaurants served by the farm less than two miles away. Three mornings a week, fruits and vegetables are harvested at the farm and delivered to the chefs who develop daily menu specials around them. Beach Plum Farm also has an egg CSA and sells produce, eggs, honey, and cut flowers to the public.

Come learn about the farm's unique restaurant relationships, how they keep up with the demand, and what they do for winter crop production!
