Soil Nitrogen: Managing the Cycle

Understanding the Nitrogen Cycle for Organic Vegetable Production

Course Description:

This workshop will give you an understanding of the dynamic life of nitrogen within the soil and the behavior of organic-approved soil nitrogen amendments. It will conclude with personal consultations with soil fertility expert Joe Heckman - bring your soil test results!

Part 1: Domesticating the Nitrogen Cycle
An overview of the dynamic nature of nitrogen in the soil and how this information can be used for effective organic vegetable management. This will cover nitrogen's journey from the atmosphere into the soil and back again, and the soil and climate conditions that govern its transformations. You will also learn the potential leaky points in the cycle and how to use nitrogen soil and plant tests to guide crop management.

Part 2: Organic Nitrogen Amendments
An introduction to available commercial nitrogen soil amendments that are approved for use in organic operations and a look at their general nitrogen release behavior. We will cover the record-keeping requirements for soil amendments and field operations and highlight some tips for identifying "allowed" materials. Plus, how to account for cover crop nitrogen (depending on the crop, termination method and soil conditions) will be discussed.

Part 3: Personal Consultations
Share your soil test results with Rutgers Extension (and NOFA-NJ Board Member) Soil Fertility Expert Joe Heckman!
