  May 17, 2008 - Ramsey, NJ - 5th Annual Heirloom Tomato Transplant Sale on May 17th.
The sale will be held between 10 am and 4 pm at the Masonic Lodge's parking lot at the corner of Franklin Tpk & Lake Street in Ramsey. This sale is a fundraiser for the Woman's Club of Ramsey.  At this time, we plan to offer more than 90 different varieties of heirloom tomato plants. This year we will again be offering the RAMAPO tomato. In addition there will be great selection of herb, eggplant, onions, artichokes & pepper plants, and all plants are grown by Susan & Richard Sisti of Catalpa Ridge Farm. The sale will be held on Saturday & Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend (May 24th & 25th) from 10 am to 4 pm on both days. Over 90 varieties of heirloom tomatoes will be offered including some common varieties, such as Pink & Yellow Brandywine, Rutgers, Black Krim to some very unusual varieties such as Pineapple, Black, Red Peach, Schimigg's Striped Hollow, White Potato Leaf, Box Car Willie, Mortgage Lifter and many more. DanLynn Farms, Pefricktown, NJ

Salem County organic farmers Daniel and Lynn Lenco will host a “Summer Sunday Farm Tour” at Danlynn Farms, 145 Perkintown Road Pedricktown, NJ 08048, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Certified organic since 2003, DanLynn Farms is a 12-acre mixed vegetable and fruit farm, selling their beautiful products number of Community Farmers Markets (including = and Whole Foods Market-Marlton), as well as to a number of restaurants and through their on-farm stand. The tour will offer an overview of the Lenco’s seasonal produce, as well a survey of their organic practices used on the farm.  Tuesday, March 20 Agriculture & Nutrition Policy Day with Congressman Rush Holt
Capitol Hill, WashingtonD.C.
FREE. Held in Washington, D.C.(includes bus transportation), this program features meetings with top Washington D.C.policymakers, including Members of Congress and representatives from the Departments of Agriculture and Labor. Topics include agricultural labor recruitment and retention, international trade restrictions, the 2007 Farm bill and new legislation guiding it to focus more on healthy foods and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, food insecurity, and development of renewable energy sources. Meetings will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m (on Capitol Hill). Lunch will be provided and the day will also include a tour of the Capitol.

Kutztown, PA.

This event, co-sponsored by The Rodale Institute, USDA/CSREES and Penn State University will feature field activities demonstrating the latest research findings from The Rodale Institute and Penn State University covering:

1. Biologically-based weed management.
2. No-till planting systems and equipment.
3. On-farm nutrient management through compost production and use.
4. Varietal selections of soybeans and corn for organic production.
5. Use of cover crops and rotations for improved soil quality.
6. Mechanical weed management tools and techniques.

The field day will integrate different disciplines and approaches including basic science, applied research and field applications of innovative agricultural practices and tools.

Our goal is to increase awareness of sustainable agriculture systems by demonstrating innovative sustainable and organic agricultural practices to farmers, extension specialists and other agriculture and natural resources professionals. The event will be a platform for scholars, researchers, farmers, extension specialists and other agriculture and natural resources professionals to network and share their experiences in research and practical field applications.

 Friday, March 31: Organic Lawn Care Training for Professionals
In response to both consumer and professional demand, NOFA-NJ offered on Friday, March 31, a half-day training at the Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit, New Jersey , “Exploring Organic Lawn Care for the Professional,” Workshop presenters included Bill Duesing of CT-NOFA, Beth Fiteni, Organic Program Director at Neighborhood Network on Long Island, Bill Hlubik from Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension of Middlesex County, as well as and Anthony Vitale, owner of New Jersey-based Organic Landscape & Design Co. Professionals will have the opportunity to learn more about what “organic” means and why consumers value it, how to apply organic standards, practices, and principles to lawn care, as well as practical information on soil fertility and pest management.   August 13-14: Jersey Fresh Wine & Food Festival
12 noon to 5:00 p.m. at Mercer County Community College, West Windsor, NJ. Co-hosted by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture and Slow Food USA, this festival featured 20 New Jersey wineries offering samples and sales, a dozen or more of the State’s finest restaurants with menus drawn from the freshest produce, meats and seafood in New Jersey; a farmer’s market where visitors can purchase Jersey Fresh produce, a seafood market with fresh Jersey seafood, New Jersey cheeses, cooking demonstrations, wine seminars, a bee hive and fresh honey, cook book authors, a Kids Zone with kids activities, live music, crafters, great jazz music, and much more. Admission was $20 for adults and included wine tasting and a wine glass. Food was offered for a nominal fee.

  March 2005: North Jersey Farmer-Chef Meeting
The 2nd Annual North(west) Jersey Farmer-Chef Meeting, jointly coordinated by NOFA-NJ and the Foodshed Alliance of Ridge and Valley, was held in late March in Sussex County . It included a panel and open discussion about successful farmer-chef relationships, followed by a farmer-chef “speed dating” session, which rotates farmers and chefs in 3-minute intervals, allowing each to meet and exchange information such as location, distribution systems, seasonal availability, and expectations for the year.
