Detailed Description of Position: We are accepting both full-season and summer applicants. Work schedule is generally 5 days per week, 8 hours a day, plus an hour lunch, plus some Saturday mornings in the busy season. Work involves weeding, planting, harvesting, washing, and crop production tasks. In addition, apprentices rotate through a set of specific management duties weekly, including greenhouse watering and management, CSA set-up and distribution, field seeding, and crop pest and weed management. Apprentices also are active in vegetable washing, packing, CSA distribution, and farmer's market sales.
Education is provided through on-farm training, and participation in CRAFT, a regional farm training association.
Stipend: Starts at $1500/month for full season interns, based on experience. For part-time, $9/hr is starting wage.
Housing: No housing on farm. Must find own housing locally. Assistance is offered to those who need help locating housing.
Description of Farm: The Good Farm produces certified organic vegetables, flowers, herbs, and small fruits for a 175 member CSA, and 2 farmer's markets. Our 18 acre farm is situated at the base of the beautiful Blue Mountain in northeastern PA.
CSA members have the option of picking up on the farm in a market-style setting or receiving a boxed share at a local delivery site. All farm members have access to our Upick garden, as well as farm events. We offer several "cooperative shares" including fruit, cheese, bread, eggs, mushrooms, and pastured meats. We strive to make our farm a local, natural and organic marketplace for our members, in addition to providing the highest quality organic vegetables.
For the past 11 years we have operated as Quiet Creek Farm, leasing land from The Rodale Institute in Kutztown PA. We bought our own land 3 years ago, transitioned it to organic production, and moved the farm this past year. We are now farming our own land, and we are The Good Farm!
Skills: No farm experience necessary. A willingness to work hard, get dirty, be a team player, and learn is required. Apprentices should be self-motivated and creative, but also work well in groups. Attention to detail is important in maintaining high quality of produce. Most importantly, a good attitude, sense of humor, and enjoyment of hard work outdoors is essential to enjoying the farm experience.
John and Aimee are happy to work with interns who are just beginning to explore the world of sustainable agriculture, and also especially enjoy training those committed to farming as a way of life. Many apprentices do return for a second or third season, and receive a higher stipend each season.
