Detailed Description of Position: Seeking a field worker with 1 - 2 years’ experience to work in all aspects of vegetable production. Including but not limited to - working as a team with the manager, other crew members and students/ visitors on greenhouse management, planting, cultivation, irrigation management, harvest, wash and packing, pest control and any other surprises that comes up on a vegetable farm. Experience with cut flowers and making bouquets would be a plus.
Although we are a production farm, the farm also serves as a transition site for students of the Davidson School, where they come to gain work experience. This is the third year of the farm in this capacity and there are also other programs being developed, including an outdoor classroom that will enable more students to enjoy the beauty and bounty of the farm.
The ideal candidate is someone who is detail-oriented, has the ability to follow directions and enjoys working with students and visitors of all backgrounds and also on their own with minimal supervision. Qualified candidates must be able to safely lift and carry 50 lbs., have a valid driver's license and pass a background check and drug test.
The hours are primarily 40 hours a week 7-3, Monday- Friday, with earlier start times on 2-3 harvest days starting in late May. Occasionally we will work late at the peak of the season. Pay is hourly, with paid time off and benefits available after a trial period. Position starts in early April and continues through Thanksgiving, with possibility of year round work in Elwyn’s Davidson School for the right candidate.
Description of Farm: At Hillside Farm of Elwyn, we cultivate about 3 acres of organically grown mixed vegetables, cut flowers, small fruit and herbs. The farm, which is located outside of Media, PA, is about 20 miles southwest of Philadelphia. It is part of the main campus of Elwyn, a Human Services organization serving disabled and disadvantaged individuals for over 130 years. The produce we grow primarily gets distributed CSA style to residents of Elwyn, is used by the students of the Davidson School in their culinary skills class and is also sold at a discounted rate to employees at a weekly farmer’s market held on site.
