EARTH DAY EVENTS 2008

Tuesday, APRIL 22: GREEN FOR LIFE @ Market in the Middle (Asbury Park)

Market in the Middle will host Green for Life and Art, an event to celebrate Earth Day as well as raise support for Asbury Park-based The Garden of Joy.  The charity event will include an local art exhibit organized by Market in the Middle’s curator, Dennis Carroll, featuring the work of Shrewsbury artist Jimmy Leslie.  Attendees will be served organic tapas and wine.

Proceeds will benefit The Garden of Joy, a non-profit organization, that endeavors to meet needs of the poor or disadvantaged in inner-city areas, particularly through nutritional enhancement and educational enrichment for school children and their community.  The organization strives to supplement current food bank and soup kitchen supplies with edible plants that are grown locally - and sometimes planted with their beneficiaries help.  Currently, The Garden of Joy is harvesting land on Trinity Church’s property in Asbury Park, as well as the West Side Community Center.

For more information on Green for Life and Art, please call 732-995-1638.  To learn more about The Garden of Joy, visit www.thegardenofjoy.org.  To view artwork of Jimmy Leslie, visit leslieartstudio.com.

Providing information and inspiration for taking action regarding global environmental issues to consumers, business professionals, public and private agencies and corporations, the PSEG

Global Green Expo intends to help people learn what can be done -- right now -- to turn the tide.

Featuring speakers, hands-on product demonstrations, informational booths and global networking opportunities will bring the most recent ideas and technologies to help teach us what we can do -- one person at a time, in both the home and work environment.  Most importantly, this event is designed to impart inspiration in the form of a gathering of interested, informed people committed to doing their part in protecting our planet. We invite you to join with others who believe that this kind of change is possible.

Saturday, April 26 - SPRING POTATO PLANTING!

Howell Living History Farm and the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA-NJ) invites the public to join forces with its staff and volunteers to plant a special crop of potatoes to be donated to the Greater Mercer Food Cooperative and other local hunger projeccts.

Visitors to the Farm can join the field crew any time between 11:00am and 3:00pm, when help is needed planting seed potatoes in furrows opened with horsedrawn equipment.

Throughtout the day, helpers can meet work horses which were used to plow, harrow, and furrow-out the potato field.  They can also meet participants in the farm's intern program, which prepares Peace Corps Volunteers, missionaries, and others for roles in international small farm projects where animal power is widely used.  Finally, questions about organic farming?  NOFA-NJ staff will be on hand to talk about organic and sustainable agriculture in the Garden State.
